Why Tenerife is a paradise for sports cars

Most people rent an ordinary hatchback on the island and later regret it. The thing is, Tenerife's roads are world-class, and in a boring car you miss 80% of the experience. Three legendary routes:

  • TF-21 to Teide — 50 km of perfectly smooth serpentine from sea level to 2100 m. Sharp turns, views over lava fields. This is the place Ferraris and Porsches were built for.
  • TF-454 to Los Gigantes — a coastal road along 600-metre cliffs dropping into the ocean. The best road for a top-down roadster.
  • TF-1 along the south coast — a modern motorway where you can cruise relaxed in a Mustang GT or Camaro, enjoying ocean views.

Plus the climate: 340 sunny days a year. The top-down works year-round, not just in summer.

3 levels of sports cars: from €45 to €1450

Level 1. Affordable sport (€45-90/day)

A sports car doesn't have to be expensive. The Mazda MX-5 — the best-selling roadster in the world, pure driving pleasure for €45/day. Light, agile, perfect for the Anaga and Masca serpentines. A step up — the Mercedes SLC Cabrio (242 hp), a compact premium roadster with a folding hard top.

Level 2. Real thrill (€150-300/day)

This is where most of the experience lives for reasonable money. Porsche 718 Boxster — the benchmark mid-engine roadster, best handling in its class. Audi S5 Cabrio (354 hp) — premium + all-wheel drive. American classics: Ford Mustang 5.0 GT V8 (450 hp, roaring V8) and Chevrolet Camaro Cabrio. More on Mustang — on its dedicated page.

Level 3. Supercars (from €500/day)

When you need the maximum: Ferrari 488 Spider (670 hp, 0-100 in 3 sec), Lamborghini Huracan Spyder (610 hp), Ferrari California T, Audi R8 (V10), Porsche 911 Carrera 4S, the mighty Chevrolet Corvette C8 Z06 (670 hp — American supercar performance at a sharper price than its European rivals), BMW 850M and Bentley Continental GTC. Top models — on the luxury cars page.

TOP-3 driving routes in Tenerife

Route 1. Teide — a test for a supercar (8 hours)

Costa Adeje → TF-28 via Vilaflor → TF-21 to Teide National Park (2100 m) → lunch at Las Cañadas → return via La Esperanza. 50 km of flawless serpentine. Perfect for a Porsche 911, Ferrari 488 or Chevrolet Corvette C8 Z06 (670 hp of American muscle). On the descent the V8 sounds like a symphony between the lava cliffs.

Route 2. Masca — roadster heaven (5 hours)

Las Americas → TF-454 along Los Gigantes → climb to Masca (one of the most scenic gorges in the Canaries) → Garachico. Narrow turns where what matters isn't power but lightness and handling. This is where the Mazda MX-5 or Porsche 718 Boxster shine.

Route 3. Coastal cruise on TF-1 (4 hours)

Las Americas → TF-1 north along the ocean → El Sauzal → La Laguna. Relaxed cruising with no stress — open road, ocean, music. Perfect for American muscle cars: Mustang GT V8 or Camaro.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the cheapest sports car in Tenerife?

The Mazda MX-5 — from €45/day. A light rear-wheel-drive roadster that many consider the best sports car in the world for the money. Perfect for serpentines and the coast. On long rentals the price is even lower.

Can I rent a Ferrari or Lamborghini for 1 day?

Yes, minimum rental is 1 day. Ferrari 488 Spider — from €1200/day, Lamborghini Huracan — from €1300/day. These models require age 28+ and 5+ years of licence.

Do I need experience driving sports cars?

For affordable models (Mazda MX-5, Mercedes SLC, Mustang) — no, any experienced driver can handle them. For 600+ hp supercars (Ferrari, Lamborghini) some experience is advisable, and we give a short briefing before handover.

Is a sports car suitable for the Teide serpentines?

Yes, perfectly. TF-21 is a smooth paved road that sports cars were built for. But remember: at 2100 m it's chilly (close the top on the climb), and there are speed bumps — drive low supercars carefully.

Which sports car should a beginner choose?

Start with the Mazda MX-5 or Porsche 718 Boxster — powerful enough to be fun but not intimidating. If you want American character — the Mustang 2.3 (314 hp but manageable).
